St Helenaâs new EP Slow Jack is the bandâs second release of intense and beautiful indie pop. Those who enjoy Built to Spill, the National, and Wilco, could get into St Helena. The six song self-produced release features âFortune Cookieâ and âOh Janeâ.
St. Helena was founded by Patrick Teahan in Boston, MA, in 2003. In 2006 they released their first EP, Happyâthe irony being, of course, that the title track is anything but a happy song. The EP received generous radio play and widespread praise. In the words of one reviewer, âHappy is not a product of exile from the broader scope of life, but a message in a bottle from an outpost of observationâa message worth unraveling.â Like the real St. Helena, the Patron Saint of Lost Causes, the music pulls from both waste and hope. The band shines a light onto your forgotten toys, your old wins and losses, and reminds you that you still have a chance. Weâve all got to dig to find some glory. The current line-up has Teahan on vocals and guitar, with Chaetan Newell joining him on guitar, and Keith Wales on bass. Shawn King Devlin, St. Helenaâs drummer, keeps them all on track and Magen Tracy rounds out the group on keys and backup vocals.

Go ahead and love St Helena⦠This is some gorgeous playing on brilliantly written (and thoroughly depressing) songs. I listened to "Oh Jane" over and over; it's as if they took the chassis from Springsteen's "Hungry Heart" and gave it a superior engine, body, and paint job. âCheap Thrills Boston 2/4/09
