Maya Papaya - yes that is actually her name - was born in Philadelphia, PA, and raised in Western Massachusetts. She has now come to make herself known as the new music gem of the Northeast.

Much of Maya's musical roots are inspired by folk, both the renaissance of the 1960s type as well as the more contemporary. Sounds of artists such as Simon & Garfunkel, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, and Vance Gilbert surrounded her, while her parents played a hodge-podge of music like that of Bobby McFerrin, Willie & Lobo, Paul Winter, and the jazz and classical music of Sunday radio shows.

Maya's musical career began at the early age of five, when she started to study piano. Later, in high school, Maya discovered the guitar, and her deep passion for poetry, the combination of which allowed Maya to compose with greater breadth and fluidity. Just two and a half years later, at age seventeen, Maya has created and produced her debut CD of fourteen self-penned songs, Spiritual Fruit, and has become a full time performing songwriter.

Spiritual Fruit is a collection of poetic songs written over the last two years. You are led into Maya's world, an emotionally charged, lush, earthy reality, as if Maya has managed to combine the musics of Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman. She has built this album with expressions to loved ones, fictional stories, and social commentary. Spiritual Fruit is infused with sounds that range from African choruses to three-part operetitas (Maya's own word), while the many melodies and harmonies weave together to create beauty you can almost taste.
