As a youngster learning classical piano in mid-fifties Poland, Adam Makowicz discovered jazz on Willis Conover's Voice of America broadcasts. By the time he was brought to New York by legendary producer John Hammond in 1977, he could already be heard on 26 albums, had performed on three continents, and been voted Number One Jazz Pianist of Europe six years in a row by the readers of Jazz Forum. Since then he has performed with such artists as Earl "Fatha" Hines, Teddy Wilson, Sarah Vaughan, George Shearing, Marian McPartland, Herbie Hancock and with such orchestras as the National Symphony of Washington, the London Royal Philharmonic, the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia and the Warsaw Philharmonic. A major attraction at jazz festivals worldwide, he has expanded his discography to 50 albums, with 36 of them under his own name. In addition to his brilliant improvisations on Berlin, Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, Cole Porter, Bernstein and other composers, he brings his extraordinary technical virtuosity to bear upon his own musical roots, building bridges between classical music and jazz, as in the disc, Reflections on Chopin, and increasingly with his own compositions. Adam Makowicz has just completed work on his new CD, Songs for Manhattan, which has been released on his own label, AM Records, on October 2003. "Makowicz plays with beauty, compassion, and vision.
