the nomenclaturally maligned overlord continues its
lo-fi pop-core sound with several cd releases
and innumerable performances spanning several years and line-ups, doing injustice to its influences and leaving its members aching.
10 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Modern Rock, POP: Beatles-pop
Details:
1998's full length album A FINISHING PICTURE was the second cd from the Philadelphia band overlord, and is witness to the group's conversion from a two-piece to a three-piece, back to a two-piece, then back to a three-piece, then into a different three-piece, and finally (temporarily) into a four-piece, all in the 16 month gap between its release and that of its predecessor, 1997's FILLER. If you think that sentence was tough to weather, rest assured that surviving its factual contents was far more arduous.
Six tracks were recorded on a Tascam 38 8-track Reel-to-Reel machine and four tracks on a 40-track Tascam DA-88 system. This marked the end of the lo-fi era, although the opening and closing tracks are a nice reminder for the nostalgic.
Supernovocaine and Universal Reversal appeared on local radio several times, and the disc received the following notices:
PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY (12/9/98): "Editor's Picks: overlord. This West Philly quartet's latest album, A Finishing Picture, plays fast and loose with its influences: early New Order, early Cure, early Smiths... overlord picks among these flowers well, and we'd like to take this time to mention that this is the most audaciously, sublimely unfashionable release we've heard this year. We applaud their courage, wit and determination. overlord celebrates the release of this petite gem tonight. Go. Wed., Dec. 9, 10 p.m. The Khyber, 56 S. Second St." Article by Joey Sweeney.
PHILADELPHIA CITY PAPER (4/8/99): "HearHere: A Finishing Picture's mix of minor-melodic vocals, driving guitar riffs and tom-tom heavy drum licks recalls what was great about early '80s mope rock. Remember when music could be peppy, pensive and mournful at the same time? The brooding, synthesizer-driven ballads display an affection for the Magnetic Fields. Ah, if only John Hughes were making teen angst flicks these days..." Article by Neil Gladstone.
This disc was followed by the cd single TRANSPARENT TUNES.
