What began as a thought-experiment (and a clever way to
avoid the intricacies of copyright law) grew into The Bite, a
HipHop album that samples performances by Seattleâs top
Jazz, Blues, Folk and Indie-Rock artists, combining their
unique voices with original production and lyrics by Spekulation.
The result is a cohesive head-nodding HipHop record
that exposes the listener to a sound normally hidden deep
within the nightclubs and coffee shops that form the foundation
of Seattleâs local music scene.

As a lyricist, Spekulation borrows techniques from many
popular contemporary emcees, both commercial and
underground. But his sound is also influenced by his time
spent performing Spoken Word and his near-unhealthy
obsession with Bob Dylan. These tools allow him to work
within genres not normally associated with the art of
emceeing, all the while crafting a sound that is distinctly
HipHop.

Spekulationâs work as a producer perhaps best illustrates
his attachment to the roots of HipHop, digging through
recordings of artists in search of the right break, horn blast
or snare drum to complete the experience. And while the
spirit and techniques remain, the samples found on this
project are taken from performances by local Seattle artists,
giving The Bite a distinct sound that represents a natural
step forward for the Seattle HipHop movement.
