.........................
Acclaimed vocalist and jazz pianist Nancy Nolan has performed internationally in Japan, France, Canada, and even the Republic of Georgia. Nancy performs regularly in Seattle at places such as Dimitriouâs Jazz Alley, ACT Theatre Bullitt Cabaret, and Crepe de Paris Cabaret.
In 2008, Nancy was chosen as one of eight professional vocalists, from across the country, to participate in a week-long performance workshop at The Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Center in Steamboat Springs, CO where she was privileged to work with renowned artists Andrea Marcovicci, Terri Ralston, Barry Kleinbort, Shelly Markham, Christopher Denny, and David A.Gaines.
In 2009, Nolan was one of seven female finalists vying for the chance to perform at the Seattle-Kobe Sister City Jazz Vocalist competition.
A Seattle native, Nancy was her parentsâ second honeymoon baby. Her talent was recognized early and her mother put a piano in the kitchen and started five-year-old Nancy on piano lessons. Nancy was a âcloset croonerâ until she began working on the drama degree at the University of Washington. When she was orphaned at 18, renowned vocal coach George Peckham became like a surrogate father, and championed her into the rich world of Seattleâs music scene where she was encouraged to pursue her music career while finishing her degree in Drama and Fine Arts.
With a voice encompassing the vibrancy of Judy Garland, the range and beauty of Sarah Vaughn, the smokiness of June Christy, the phrasing and intonation of Dianne Reeves, the soul of Eva Cassidy, the buoyancy of Peggy Lee, and the presence and sensuality of her current favorite vocalist, Brazilian, Claudia Villela, Nolan holds her own in any company.
Jazzers think of her as a theater person. Theater people think of her as a jazz singer. Resisting labels, Nolan just chooses her music by the chill factor, that brought her to know her gift.... and the experience she wants to give to her audience.
A special note about the track "Goodbye Mr. Evans"... Legendary jazz musician and composer Steve Allen wrote the lyrics to the melody composed by Phil Woods to honor the great jazz pianist Bill Evans. Later when Allen was headlining at Seattle's premiere jazz club, Jazz Alley when he invited Nancy to sit in with him on a few tunes. Three days later the music and lyrics for âGoodbye Mr. Evansâ arrived in her mailbox. Nancy says, âI fell in love with the music and with Steveâs graciousness, and Iâve been singing it ever since. To my knowledge, I was the first person to record this song with the lyrics.â
Nancy dedicates this recording to the memory of her mother, Helen, who âlet me be me,â and to her father Bill, the tenor with a big Irish heart.
