Whether it's composing feature film music, studio work for major recording artists, or performing on world stages, Lyle Workman enjoys the fruits of a diversified career.
Lyle composed the music for the #1 hit films YES MAN, SUPERBAD, THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, and FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL. A seasoned guitarist, Lyle was recruited by Sting and performed his first show with the musical icon in London for the monumental Live 8 benefit. A tour with Sting followed throughout Europe and South America in the summer of 2006.
A Northern California native, Lyle was enlisted as a member of Todd Rundgrenâs group, recording Nearly Human (1989), Second Wind (1991) and toured extensively throughout The US and Japan. Lyle recorded with Jellyfish Spilt Milk (1993), and from 94â to 98â began a string of records and tours with Pixies founder and creative force Frank Black. Some of the recordings include Teenager of the Year and Frank Black and the Catholics. A testament to Lyleâs diversity, he began a creative endeavor with Jazz legend, drummer Tony Williams, and contributed a song on Tonyâs record, Wilderness (1996).
Lyle moved to Los Angeles in 1996 and became sought after as a studio musician. In the years to follow he recorded with artists such as Sheryl Crow, Shakira, Jacob Dylan and They Might Be Giants. Lyleâs distinctive guitar work can also be heard on many film scores.
Recruited by Beck for a string of world tours, Lyle hit the road from 1999 to 2001, performing at major American and European venues and festivals, and television shows such as Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show, Late Night with Conan OâBrien, and American Music Awards.
Lyle began writing commercial music for television, radio, and documentary scores, eventually making the jump to feature film, the first being MADE, written and directed by Jon Favreau; this collaboration led to Jonâs television show DINNER FOR FIVE, featuring Lyleâs Django Reinhardt inspired music.
Lyle wrote additional music for the Will Ferrell film, KICKING AND SCREAMING. This began a fruitful relationship with one of the producers, Judd Apatow, who chose Lyle to compose music for his directorial film debut, THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN. This led to several Apatow productions, and in addition to the films listed above, Lyle composed additional music for KNOCKED UP and DRILLBIT TAYLOR.
As a producer, Lyle produced the group Smash Mouth for the soundtrack of Mike Myersâ CAT IN THE HAT and just recently Hollandâs top recording artist, Ilse DeLange, for her platinum selling #1 record Incredible.
