Details:
âI doubt thereâs a cabaret singer out there who could sing this song any better. Francesca⦠you can sing anything!â Andrea Marcovicci, legendary cabaret star
Francesca Amari recently appeared in NYC in the esteemed, 38th Season finale of Lyrics and Lyricists at the 92nd St Y with cabaret star Andrea Marcovicci. She made her New York City cabaret debut last fall at the famed Metropolitan Room, and in the fall of 2008, reprised her debut cabaret show, "Secretly Square" to critical acclaim, as well as debuted her first solo CD, âBetter Days.â
Sheâs had a banner few years, vocally. During 2007, she earned rave reviews appearing in the Florida premiere of the new musical, âMidlife! The Crisis Musical,â created and directed by Broadway veteran brothers Bob and Jim Walton. She reprised this role this past year in the Pennsylvania premiere of the show at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. Prior to that, she traveled to Washington D.C., where she sang in concert with the incomparable Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul & Mary; traveled to NYC, where she sang with folk legend Christine Lavin at the legendary Birdland Jazz Club; to Ann Arborâs famed âThe Arkâ folk club to appear w/ Ms. Lavin, and is featured on Ms. Lavinâs CD, âFolkZINGER,â recorded live at Chicagoâs famed Old Town School of Folk Music. She also appeared in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where she studied and performed with cabaret and Broadway greats Karen Mason, Andrea Marcovicci, Shelly Markham, and Barry Kleinbort.
A versatile vocalist, Francesca sings everything from standards to pop to musical theatre to folk. She was a 2006 and 2005 quarterfinalist in the prestigious American Traditions Competition, part of the Savannah Music Festival, which focuses on American composers. This vocal competition selects just 30 performers from a nationwide pool of vocalists.
In addition to performing her cabaret shows in Chicago, Colorado, New York and West Michigan, Francesca tours the Midwest with her trio, Boogie Woogie Babies, with three shows she created, Boogie Woogie Babies - the 1940s Revue, Boogie Down Broadway and their newest, Boogie, Beehives & Beyond! The group has recorded 2 popular CDs. She performs with several other groups, including a cabaret show with popular West MI female impersonator Michael Holmes, entitled, âMichael & Francesca: Together Again (For the Very First Time); The Fabulous Eastones, a 50/60s rock & roll and Motown band; her own jazz combo, CabaretAmari; is the lead singer for The Rhythm Section Jazz Band; and is featured in a new musical revue, NOT For Women Only!
She's appeared in national and regional theatre productions; shows include âAâ¦My Name is Alice,â âPump Boys & Dinettes,â âYouâre A Good Man, Charlie Brown,â and âBeehive.â Francesca is part of the distinguished Touring Artist Roster for Michigan Humanities Council & Heartland Arts Fund. She is an adjunct teacher in the theatre department for Grand Valley State University, and teaches/directs childrenâs theatre throughout West MI. Francesca also directs audio books for Brilliance Audio.
"Ms. Amari, with an abundance of self-reflexive wit, and consummate vocal skill, brought us to the heart of the mystery of how and why music can be such a powerful force in our lives ⦠Her fearless celebration of her alleged squareness stands as a powerful rebuke to the compulsive hipsterism that dominates much talk about music and in so doing robs the music of its communicative emotional essence. Another, and quite better way of saying the above, is, as they used to put it on New York's old radio station WWRL, "if you don't dig this, you got a hole in your soul."
