About the composers:
Nikolai Kapustin (born 1937)
Nikolai Kapustin studied with Avrelian Rubakh (pupil of Felix Blumenfeld who also tought Vladimir Horowitz) and later, Alexander Goldenweiser at the Moscow Conservatory. His graduation concert program included Franz Lisztâs B minor
Sonata and Beethovenâs Sonata op. 54. He started composing before he entered the Conservatory, making his first attempt
at a piano sonata at age 13. During the 1950s he acquired a reputation as a jazz pianist, arranger and composer. He is steeped, therefore, in both the traditions of classical virtuoso pianism and improvisational jazz. He fuses these influences in his compositions, using jazz
idioms in formal classical structures. Kapustinâs compositions exceed 130 opuses, and counting. He views himself as a composer rather than a jazz musician:
âI was never a jazz musician. I never tried to be a real jazz pianist, but I had to do it because of the composing. Iâm not interested in improvisation â and what is a jazz musician without improvisation?â
Lowell Liebermann ( born 1961 )
Lowell Liebermann is one of Americaâs most frequently performed and recorded living composers. Called by the New
York Times âas much of a traditionalist as an innovatorâ, Liebermannâs music is known for its technical command and
audience appeal. Having written over one hundred works in all genres, several of them have gone on to become standard
repertoire for their instruments.
Li Yinghai (1927-2007)
Li Yinghai was one of the most respected in the field of composition and musicology in China. Li had held important positions at major music conservatories for more than 50 years, and helped bring new waves of prominent composers like Tan Dun and Fan Zuyin. He was the author of several books on music theory and harmonic analysis. As a composer Li was a colorist, and often used folk melodies in his works.
