Susanna Yoko Henkel belongs to the leading violinists of the young generation.
In 2007, the German âWelt am Sonntagâ chose her to be one of Anne Sophie Mutterâs inheritresses, the renowned US music journal âStringsâ featured her on the cover of its January issue, and her CDs were highly praised by the media.
Already during her studies Susanna Yoko Henkel won eminent prizes at international competitions, among them the âQueen-Elisabethâ competition in Brussels, the âMozartâ competition in Salzburg and the âTibor Vargaâ Competition in Sion.
In 1998 she won the first prize at the German Music Competition in Berlin, followed by a scholarship by the Mozart Society Dortmund and the âDeutsche Stiftung Musiklebenâ Trust Award. In 1999 she again won the first prize at the International Music Competition in Markneukirchen.
Since then she has worked intensely as a soloist, appearing with leading orchestras, such as the Berlin Radio Broadcasting Orchestra, the Radio Symphony Orchestras of the SWR and the MDR Leipzig, the Symphony Orchestras Aachen and Duisburg, the Orchestra of the Beethovenhalle Bonn, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra Mozarteum Salzburg, the KBS Symphony Orchestra Seoul. She has performed at renowned festivals such as the Ansbacher Bachwoche, the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, the Rheingau-Musik-Festival and the concerts in chatelet Paris.
In 2003 Susanna Yoko Henkel was engaged as soloist for the acclaimed âToyota Classicsâ tour, followed by performances of the Mendelssohn violin concerto in Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Susanna Yoko Henkel was born into a German-Japanese musician family and began to play the violin at the age of two, receiving lessons by her mother. Those followed instructions by Conrad von der Goltz and at the tender age of 12 she enrolled at the music academy in Freiburg/Germany, receiving lessons by Rainer Kussmaul.
Later she has been attending the Munich Academy for five years to complete her studies with Ana Chumachenco.
She was further influenced by Gerhard Schulz, Joseph Silverstein, Györgi Sebok and Lorand Fenyves.
Besides her career as a soloist Susanna Yoko Henkel is a passionate chamber musician. In 2006 she launched her own chamber music festival in Zagreb/Croatia, which has already established itself as one of countryâs major cultural events.
Susanna Yoko Henkel performs on the 1710 âEx Leslie Tateâ Stradivarius, kindly loaned by a private proprietor.
