Details:
True to her name, Sun Singleton is an artist whose light can be seen coming slowly over the horizon of World Soul music. A native of Woodbridge, Virginia, Sun is a singer-songwriter currently based in the fabulous zoo that is Brooklyn, New York.
New York was Sun's first stop in 1996 after graduating with a B.A. from the film directing program at Howard University. She spent the late nineties job-hopping in the spheres of film and television as a production coordinator, an indie video producer, electrician, and more production assistant gigs than she cares to remember. She knew that there had to be something else in the cards for her.
That "something else" presented itself to her in a gloss studio in midtown Manhattan late one summer evening in 1996. Upon the gracious surprise invite of The Roots bandleader Questlove, Sun sat in on the recording session that would turn her heart and life permanently toward music.
Producer/singer D'Angelo's soulful candlelit session was a revelation that shook the songs out of her. She had a crush, a pathetic one, on the singer and his music. The music, thankfully, returned her affection and a soulbaby was born. Sun later appeared in D'Angelo and the Soultronics video "Left and Right" for about three miliseconds. Hee!
By 1998 Sun was supplementing her musical pursuits with a foray into music journalism, working first as a fact checker for Blaze magazine, and later as a music critic for VIBE Magazine. Sun continues to write for VIBE and Russell Simmons' Oneworld Magazine. She also worked as a research editor on the 2004 VIBE Book, "Unbelievable: The Life, Death, and Afterlife of the Notorious B.I.G.," by Cheo Hodari Coker, for which a film is now in the works.
By 1999, Sun Singleton was gigging with another of her musical heroes, A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip, in his band ROSE. ROSE's core members were a who's-who of prodigious, young jazz heads: keyboardist Kelvin Sholar, his brother Chris Sholar on guitar, drummer Jonathan Blake, and bassist Antwan Barrett-Seawright. ROSE's equally fly, rotating roster of side vocalists included Sylvia Gordon (lead vocalist/bassist,electro-funk band Kudu), Stevie Wonder Morris' angelic-voiced daughter Aisha Morris, and rockgoddess Kiki Hawkins (Kelis, Mary J. Blige). Sun remembers that period between 1999-2001 as a blur of vocal growth and hard lessons. "Our record with Q-Tip, "Kamaal The Abstract" was shelved. Q fought like a dog for "Abstract" and then jetted to another label, and ROSE went poof as a result. But the experience linked me with Kelvin Sholar, a well-respected, experimental jazz producer in his own right, who produced several songs on my 2003 EP, Bing Cherry."
And the mighty move on. Soon after Rose dissipated, Kiki and Sun formed a side vocal duo called Earth.
As Earth, they've backed some of Soul music's finest, touring with house music legend Ultra Nate, UK nu-jazz chanteuse Julie Dexter, and former Brand New Heavies vocalist N'dea Davenport.
In 2003, Sun sang and world-hopped with Bay Area rap legends Blackalicious, and was a touring member of the nutty- smart hiphop band The Majesticons. Under the guiding vision of undie hip-pop producer and (phat)beat poet Mike Ladd, The "Beauty Party" album was a mythical satire of the hiphop elite's nouveau-riche blonde ambitions, and Sun hopes that the album will be remade one day as an uproarious gospel stageplay.
Sun and Kiki also supported the hiphop soul artist St. Juste on The Roots' 2004 Kool Tour with Common and Martin Luther.
Sun Singleton is now completing work on a new project with the popular Brooklyn-based broken beat masters SpyMusic. The upcoming project merges hip-hop, world music, jazz, rap, and house sensibilities.
"From music journalism to concept producing, from singing as a sought-after side vocalist to performing as a dynamic lead, Singleton's immersion into all things musical has lead to a distinctive receptiveness to collaboration and innovation." - From the BAM/Sista Factory press release
