Drawing on the personal and at times political, Soljakâs songs are little stories of love and loss placed in a rootsy folk/ blues setting with plenty of acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies.
Lyrically Soljakâs approach is almost poetic and she shows a keen eye for detail.
In between the reggae back beats of'Lemon Wedge Moon,' to the upbeat folk rock, 'I Like it,' she goes a little latin and gets countrified and folksy but always with a streetwise ear for what's authentic.
Originally from Havelock North, New Zealand, Katy Soljak travelled to California to pursue a musical career in the late 80âs following the success of âLadies sing the Bluesâ in Auckland.
In LA, Soljak worked with underground famous musicians and poets like Steven Hodges from the Tom Waitsâ Band, Paul Barrere from LITTLE FEAT and sang and recorded with Jack Brewer (Saccharine Trust SST).
Soljakâs band âSoljakâ, gained a following in Los Angeles in the 90âs and regularly played the Sunset Bld. clubs, LA cafes and Art Galleries.
Katy Soljak returned home to New Zealand and self produced 'The Madonna of Godzone;' a collection of story songs composed and influenced by her time in America.
