Eamon Friel A Short Biography
I was born in London and reared in Derry. My parents came back to Ireland when I was five. As the old song says they reared me tenderly. I went to school in Derry, university in Belfast and I became a teacher. I escaped in 1987 and since then I have been working for the BBC presenting two shows a week. One of them won a Sony award in 1993 in the best music programme section. I also wrote topical songs for a decade for BBC Radio Ulster, BBC Radio 5 in Manchester and RTE in Dublin. I needed the money.
Over time I began to write real songs, finding my style and stance gradually. I started to write melodies on the piano. For me it's a much better composing instrument than the guitar. So tunes first and then the words arrive, sometimes weeks, months, even years later. I have set up my own small record label THRAN RECORDS and in the first decade of the new century I have written and recorded four albums...WORD OF SPRING, THE WALTZ OF THE YEARS, HERE IS THE RIVER and now in the year 2009 my new album SMARTER. I believe in these albums. I believe that they contain some of the best songs of my time and there are some, whose appreciation I value, who agree with me.
