Details:
Music is an integral part of the family tradition of Reena Shrivastava and Rajeeb Chakraborty, a sister-brother duo that started with a flourish at a very early age. Their father, Rabi Chakraborty (an eminent exponent of the Senia Maihar Gharana), sensing their aptitude for music, became their devoted guru and introduced Reena to the Sitar and Rajeeb to the Sarod. Their metamorphosis as gifted musicians and as stalwarts of their generation has been a fruition of the paternal effort.
Reena is a graduate from Calcutta University and Rajeeb has earned his Master's degree in Music. Both of them have received National Scholarship for instrumental music. Rajeeb's academic attainments include "Sangeet Prabhakar" and "Sangeet Praveen," conferred by the Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad, which awarded him gold medals in both.
Concerts have been a part of their career for over a decade now. They have performed in major music festivals throughout India and abroad as soloists as well as in duets. The noted festivals at which they have won accolades include The Dover Lane Music Conference, Calcutta, The Sangeet Natak Academy Festival, Delhi, The Sadarang Music Conference and The Thyagaraj Festival, Madras.
Reena and Rajeeb have successfully toured all over the western world, performing at major cities in Europe and the USA. As a team, their performances in the USA and Canada in 1994 have mesmerized audiences and critics alike and won the critical acclaim. Their first compact disc, Talented Trio" with Kousic Sen on Tabla, was released during the 1994 US tour. This second compact disc is being released during their 1996 tour of Europe and USA.
Subhen Chatterjee is the senior most disciple of Pandit Swapan Chaudhari and a performing artist of the World Organization of Music and Dance (WOMAD), an organization formed by world renowned guitarist Mr. Peter Gabriel. He has performed with prominent artists such as V G. Jog, Girija Devi, Pandit Jasraj, Vishwamohan Bhatt, Parween Sultana, and Ashish Khan. Subhen has formed an Indian classical orchestra KARMA' which is very popular in India. He has also toured extensively in Europe and in USA.
About the Music:
Raga Bageshree is a midnight melody. The second (rishabha) and the fifth (panchama) notes are excluded in ascending scale while all the notes are used in descending scale. The artists present alap, jor, and a gat in a unique taal charsawari of 11 beats (2-2-2-2-3) which goes like this:
Dhin TiRaKiTa I Dhi Na I Tu Na I Kat Ta I DhiNa KaDhi NaKa
1 2 I 3 4 I 5 6 I 7 8 I 9 10 11
A low pitch (dhala) tabla is used which enhances the beauty of the gat.
Raga Jog is a late night melody. It omits the second (rishabha) and the sixth (dhaivata) notes from the scale while the fourth (madhyama) is flat (komala). The Raga makes use of the third note (gandhara) in both sharp (teevra) and flat (komala) variations.
The artists conclude with a dhun (light melody) in Raga Manz Khamaj set in Dadra taal of 6 beats.
