Details:
Comprising a recital programme of four major classical works spanning the past four centuries, Antonis Hatzinikolaouâs debut recording represents the culmination of an impressive classical music education involving some of the worldâs finest institutions and performers.
Antonisâ higher education began at the Conservatory of East Attica in Athens where he studied Music Performance and Classical Harmony. Having received First Class Honours and Distinction for both degrees, he gained a full scholarship to study with Alexandra Christodimou at the Philippos Nakas Conservatory where he was awarded by a unanimous jury First Prize Honours and Distinction for the Guitar Soloist Diploma. In 2004 Antonis joined Londonâs Royal Academy of Music where he began his Postgraduate Diploma in Guitar Performance with Michael Lewin, Timothy Walker and John Mills. During this course Antonis became increasingly interested
in performance research and ultimately graduated with a Masters of Music degree, having completed a concert project exploring John Dowlandâs depiction of melancholy in reference to Benjamin Brittenâs Nocturnal. In addition to achieving a Distinction for his Masterâs degree, Antonis was further awarded the âReginald Thatcher Award for General Excellenceâ and, notably, the honorary DipRAM â the highest performance award conferred by the Royal Academy of Music.
During his formative years, Antonisâ performance style has been influenced by a number of well known musicians. With his great interest in contemporary music, Antonis has worked with composers such as Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, Nicholas Maw, Bayan Northcott, Stephen Dodgson and Evis Sammoutis. Moreover, he has attended masterclasses with many of the worldâs leading guitarists including John Williams, David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Fabio Zanon, Aniello Desiderio, Roland Dyens, Jonathan Leathwood and Edoardo Catemario.
In his professional career, Antonis has already experienced notable success. He has received distinctions in numerous international guitar competitions and festivals, including the Patras National Guitar Festival Competition (Greece, 2001), the International Koblenz Guitar Competition âHubert Käppelâ (Germany, 2004), the Ivor Mairants International Guitar Award (UK, 2005) and the prestigious Julian Bream Prize (UK, 2006) adjudicated by Julian Bream himself. Antonisâ professional engagements have taken him to Italy, Greece, Spain and the UK and have included performances with the Kensington Symphony Orchestra and with Grammy-winning violinist Peter Sheppard Skærved in the 2006 Paganini Festival in London. Recently, Antonis was awarded the 2007 Park Lane Group Young Artist Award and subsequently made his Purcell Room debut (Londonâs Queen Elizabeth Hall) in 2008 and also performed in St. Martin-in-the-fields in 2009.
Apart from his solo playing, Antonis is an accomplished chamber musician and is a member of the Fugata Quintet that specializes in the performance of Nuevo Tango repertoire. 2009 sees the release of Antonisâ debut CD under the Draft Records label and of NMCâs Songbook CD box set of 20th Anniversary Concerts at Kings Place(London), where Antonis appears with other artists.
