The seven gorgeous tracks that comprise Cleveland Wehleâs latest album are masterful and elegant soundscapes that double as meditations on spaces and places both mythic and familiar. Crafted from electronic instruments (piano, harp, strings) as well as sounds from the natural world (rainfall, birds, a distant harbor bell), SOLACE is intelligent ambient music that engages the ear as well as the mind. From the rippling chimes of Clare Island, to chords that extend like a horizon on Indigo Sky, to the lush romantic strings beneath Moon Garden, each song is densely layered yet deftly woven, leaving just enough silence between the sounds for a listener to fully immerse themselves in complex and graceful compositions like the title track, which is comprised of three sections ('Intro,' 'Hymn,' and 'Return'), and is a sweeping journey unto itself. Listening to SOLACE from inside a pair of headphones, one is transported, moved, and restored, leaving this listener to believe that the 'solace' Wehleâs album offers is, in fact, the healing wisdom that music and meditation share: that through escape, we inevitably find home.

I once heard a radio spot for National Public Radio in which a child described radio as being better than TV âbecause the pictures are better.â I think of music in the same way. Although I do enjoy fine vocal music, for the most profound musical experience I prefer well-crafted instrumental music. When you take the time to really listen, youâll hear the narratives of your innermost being, and these are best told not in words, but in the language of the spirit.

SOLACE is the third recording in Cleveland Wehleâs ambient music series, and itâs the perfect accompaniment to these inner explorations. His compositions are subtle and multi layered, his sounds are rich and warm. Mr. Wehleâs influences include everything from traditional Irish music to the sounds of the Far East, along with hints of the impressionist master composers Debussy and Sibelius.

In addition to being a professional musician, I am also a yoga and aikido instructor, and Iâm always looking for good quality music to play during my classes. SOLACE has already assumed regular rotation in my class playlist.

I let SOLACE cycle on my iPod during a recent long flight. Suddenly, it seemed, we were at our destination. Iâd been transported in more ways than one.

We found this CD to be very relaxing. Each and every track is beautiful. Solace not only serves well as background music, but also as a delightful listening experience that invites you to a sonic, if somewhat melancholy, landscape. Find a quiet room and allow yourself time to unwind. By the way, this cd sounds great under a good pair of headphones!! (Dave Miller)
