"Heavy music isn't just a style of music; it's a way of life."
-Dave Mustaine
Every guy in this band swears by that. Otherwise, we wouldn't be here. The road here wasn't an easy one either. Like life, it was littered with obstacles and setbacks. I think all bands are like that.
The band started a few years ago when I posted an ad on the website winnipegbands.com. I met some great players there, including current members Pascal and Eric. However, before that, I started with a whole other band, but eventually, those who weren't up to par were weeded (or kicked) out, and the strong stayed. Darwinâs theory at it's finest.
Pascal I met after I saw an ad saying "Drummer looking for band. Have jam space with P.A. Can play anything heavy from GNR to Metallica." Good enough for me. We all know that a lot of people brag about their skills. Believe me, I know, but Pascal could actually back it up and then some. Pascal is an excellent ideas man when it comes to shows and writing, and is a good guy to have around.
I actually met Jordan earlier, while I was playing in his band. Ironically however, (or maybe not) I was asked to leave on the grounds that our styles varied too significantly. Fair enough. Months later I noticed an ad in a musicianâs directory that said "bass player available.â So I asked to meet this Jordan guy at my apartment. As I pulled into the parking lot, I see this scruffy bearded guy waiting at my door holding a bass case. The first words out of my mouth were "Hey, Fucker!", and from then on, he's been here. I'm pretty sure everyone knows that bass players are kinda hard to find, especially those who can play the damn instrument. Jordan is that guy. I've never seen anyone play bass with such ferocity and passion, but also with a sense of fun and precision. It's a rare gift.
So with that lineup (and the guitar player who shall remain nameless) we hit the clubs of Winnipeg, including a wonderful gig at the Palomino Club, where we were showered with chants of "Turn it down!" from not only the crowd, but the sound guy. We heard that was an agent in the audience, but that gig amounted to very little. After that summer of gigs, the guitarist moved to Calgary to be with his family. Fine.
Never once considering packing it in, the remaining warriors went on a hunt for a new member. We auditioned a bunch of people, and most had neither the skill nor the drive to hold up. Some werenât into our brand of new thrash, or NWOCHM as we like to call it (okay... as I like to call it). Some didn't even know how to tune their guitars. However, we soldiered on, trying out as many people as we could. We were frustrated, and we were exploring every avenue to find our new guitarist. I happened to check back on the old winnipegbands.com site and noticed an ad from a guy named Eric. He listed his influences and I was intrigued; no one in the city that I knew of was into Timo Tolkki of Stratovarius. So I messaged him and asked him to send me some music to see what he was into. I really dug it, and I asked him down to the jamspace, and after some initial shyness, what came forth was a hell of a guitar player with a real sense of melody, something that is lost of a lot of people. Meticulous with his note selection, Eric is a guy who knows what should be played and knows what he wants to hear, which is exactly what I wanted. Very knowledgeable with theory, employing a great musical ear and sense of timing, Eric fit the band like a Powerglove.
Ever since, we've been playing shows, writing and preparing for stardom. But one thing is for sure: the band has never sounded better, the new music is killer, and the vibe as friends is there. We are ready to conquer the city, the country, and then the world. Maybe Mars. Hope you are there with us.
