A Porch, Revisited by Dan Leach & Still Friends
Steve has a new porch here on the bank of the Peace River, overlooking his beloved salt marsh. His old, worn, Gibson rests gently here at my side. The view takes my breath away. The new house was turned on the property so its back is to the neighbors. Not an unfriendly turn - away from people, Steve's mind would never work that way, but toward the beauty that he spoke about so often, and wrote about so eloquently.
Here, on the porch, I look out over the sawgrass flats and see Punta Gorda on the horizon, sparkling like a jewel in the evening sun, a few miles downstream and on the opposite bank. Between here and there, I see little of civilization but the distant highway, which makes a razor-straight slice across the landscape and provides a low hum which, after a few moments, fades into the background to blend with other, more natural, sounds - a hawk, something splashing in the shallows, Steve's dog, Maggie, barking a greeting to an arriving car.
Behind me, inside the house, are the sounds of dinner dishes being cleared away amid soft conversations. The children are downstairs playing in the pool. They will be raised on music - music created by Steve on this old guitar. Music inspired by Steve and humbly offered to them, and to you, by Still Friends. The kids are already writing, singing, and playing instruments. The songs will be heard. Florida, the earth, and all her inhabitants can look to the future with hope, because these children are being raised to care, and care they do.
This music is from all of us, and it's for our loved ones. It reflects our joy, our love, and the depths of our shared grief. Our families and our tribe allow us to be who we are, and to share our best selves. We offer these songs with a nod to our shared history, and our eyes on the skies.
With hope, love, and gratitude.....Rise Up!
