Music is not my life. Life is music. Songwriting is a way to express life and the music naturally follows. Words have tones. Phrases have melodies. Playing an instrument was a necessary evil to me at first. I learned to play guitar when I was 13. When I would write a song I could hear the entire composition in my head and it was frustrating. There was always a guitar around when I was growing up but I would have loved to play the piano earlier. I was intimidated by the piano for some reason and without formal lessons or someone pushing me it was just easier to play guitar. Many years later, born of guitar oriented songs, came Dreaming of Oz, my first official album.

I got some musicians together and gave them the basic chords and the freedom to compose whatever they liked within that structure. Take a âBeatlesâ influenced Bassist, a âGrungeâ Drummer, and an 80âs big guitar sound. Throw in my shadowy poetic lyrics and very feminine voice and you have Dave Matthews in a Crowded House on Sundays.

I licensed stuff out to independent films and to Disney. We, Cari Eden Band performed everywhere in Jacksonville, Florida for a couple of years until I was really fed up with people screaming âplay Freebird!â and the clubs wanting you to pay them to play there even though you had a following. In fact I was fed up with performing. I had given my cd to every successful artist I could get close to; Fred Durst, Puddle of Mudd, the Van Zants. After a bad experience with an âactorâ turned music manager who told me I didnât have soul because I wasnât black, I decided that the music business was not for me. Not because I believed him but because I he was tired of idiots like him.

So I stopped trying to promote myself and started being myself. I started writing and playing again which is what it is supposed to be about in the first place. All the while life is playing this tune that sounds so familiar. The guy I had loved since I was 19 popped into my life and asked me to marry him. We moved into a cabin my mother built in the middle of nowhere (not far from Tallahassee) with my girls and I began again. All my life I had really been annoyed by southern rock but there is such raw honesty and a romance about the southern culture, that it just cannot be ignored. It seemed like every time I sat down to the piano to play some of my older guitar songs this hot, steamy back woods sound kept oozing out and morphing them into something completely different and mesmerizing.

I write, I play but I am just a girl looking for a way to communicate the human condition, and inspire someone along the way. Rarely do I write about my actual life events but Bottomless Wishing Well was about my travels to Nepal because it had such a profound affect on my life. I am not one of those writers who won't tell you what the lyrics mean and say that it's open for interpretation. Everything is open to interpretation! When you hear a song just like anything else you come across in life, you interpret it according to your own experiences. But if you want to know where I was coming from, I am going to tell you. For me, that is the whole reason for writing in the first place. I have been strongly influenced by artists like Chris Cornell, Neil Finn, Fiona Apple who have the ability to take a cerebral, soul-wrenching experience and fashion it into four minutes of bliss.
