All kinds of music has influenced Colleen Mari's sound. As a kid growing up in the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont, there was always tons of music swirling around. Her mother played piano every day and encouraged the family of four girls to sing while she played. There was always country music playing which Colleen loved, especially her Grandpa's reel-to-reels. Her mother was the organist at her church, so church music was a staple. Of course there was hard rock (80's hair bands anyone?), hip hop, blues, reggae, ... but Colleen really got her strong vocal foundation singing in the choir. She sang in select choirs throughout high school, college, and continued doing so as a member of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra choir (and select choir) into her mid twenties. As much as she loved singing with the orchestra, inside Colleen was burning to find her own voice, which she has clearly found here on LEDGES. A sound that uniquely blends the vocal prowess of a classic singer like Linda Ronstadt with the belting blues of Etta James, giving her a sound all her own. Colleen is always listening to lots of different types of music and some of the singers that she admires and has learned from include: Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, Joss Stone, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Janis Joplin, Christy Mcvie, Stevie Nicks, Maria Muldaur, Norah Jones, Susan Tedeschi, Billie Holiday, Willie Nelson,Tina Turner, George Jones, Natalie Merchant, Merle Haggard, John Prine, Johnny Cash and June Carter and many, many more.
