From Hatfield Yorkshire in Northern England, and now resident in South Australia, Col has put together, after a year of persuasion from friend Chris Adams, an album of songs most anyone would be able to relate to.
Uncompromising and uncomplicated and recorded in one take, the songs draw from folk, blues and pop influences delivered in his idiosyncratic style. From despair to hope, this is a journey most have shared in one way or another.
Among his CD collection you will find an eclectic range of music from Van Morrison and Joni Mitchell to DJ Brasco, Miles Davis, The Verve and Robert Plant with a smattering of Mozart, Grieg, Rodrigo and Drum and Bass. Last time I was around his place he played Antonio Carlos Jobim, early Animals hits and Etienne de Cressy! Like his taste in music the album never gives the impression that you have listened to the same song in ten variations, which is a criticism I have read about Jackson Browne. Col places the songs in a particular way so that songs contrast from one track to another without disrupting the flow of the album. He makes sure that the story the collection tells as a whole isnât sacrificed for the sake of contrast. Whether he has achieved this is a subjective call, but I think itâs true that the album avoids being repetitious.
