Details:
LISTEN UP! features eight tracks: seven original stories by Kathy and one folktale from India. Most of the original works are âHilary tales.â Kathy created the character Hilary years ago while raising three daughters. Over time, the collection grew, with a never-ending supply of story themes drawn from everyday life. While most of the CD was completed in a studio setting, Kathy recorded two of her stories on location. Young school students enthusiastically contributed sound effects and responses for the âliveâ recording, and the results are delightful.
As an added touch, a drummer performs short rhythm stings between the CDâs stories. Kathyâs intent is for the drumming to have a dual purpose: aside from serving as a break between stories, it also provides the stimulus for activity. Listeners are invited to follow along as they hear rhythms on the African Djembe and Irish Bodhran drums. Tongue in cheek, Kathy says the only down-side of this activity is that children might choose to bang out the rhythms on the back of their parentsâ head-rests during car trips. Echoes of âDo I have to pull this car over andâ¦â come to mind!

MORE ABOUT THE STORYTELLER
For nearly twenty years Kathy Jessup has performed her original tales in countless schools, libraries, concerts and festivals--- much to the delight of her audiences.
From an early age, Kathy was drawn to the art of telling stories. She came from a large extended family rich in creativity, with many musicians, artists and writers sprinkled throughout her family tree. As Kathy grew older she switched from telling stories to writing them, eventually pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. But it was only a matter of time until she felt the familiar creative tug luring her back to the imaginary world of âpretend.â She began writing for children and soon rediscovered her love of storytelling as well.
Nowadays Kathy indulges her passion for storytelling in many ways: through helping children create their own stories, by working with Teachers to give them insight into the creative process and, of course, by telling stories whenever she can to whoever will listen!
Kathyâs stories and articles have appeared in various publications and anthology recordings. Listen Up: Tellable Tales for Hungry Ears is her first solo CD.
When Kathyâs not telling stories, she keeps busy with a number of different workshops including her very popular writing workshops for children. Kathy also features these workshops at Teachersâ Conventions and Professional Development Days for educational and literacy organizations.
