The idea "Katouz" has been existing for approx. 30 years already and originates from the intention of the musical director Claude Venance to create a band just like those of his idols Maurice White and Earth, Wind & Fire, Johnny Pacheco and the Fania All Stars etc. Claude Venance, born on April 4th 1956 in Saint-Pierre, Martinique, has left his native country at the age of 18 in order to absolve his military service in the French Army. He was stationed in Germany where he made his first musical steps by playing the organ as a member of a military orchestra. In 1979 he left the Army and founded his first own band in Germany playing many different styles: Biguine, Compas, Funk, etc.. His main objective was transposing his musical wisdom which has developped during years of listening to the work of great musicians like EW&F, Fania All Stars, Ray Barretto, Kassav, El Gran Combo, etc. But he had to find out that it was very difficult to find musicians who really could identify themselves with his ideas. In 1994 Mr. Venance decided to found a salsa-band following the model of Johnny Pacheco's "Fania All Stars": A band consisting of musicians of different origins. Since 1993 Claude's wife and flute player Jeannine E. Venance started supporting his work and encouraged him to play his own compositions. Their co-operation became more and more intense, the wish to create something "unusual" stronger and stronger. In 2008, seven years after their wedding and having two lovely daughters, Claude and Jeannine E. Venance realized their common dream: The foundation of their own record label MI-YO PRODUCTIONS. Actually they have released their first album "Hommages", which shall show their deepest respect for the achievement of their idols, but also draw their listener's attention to existing issues in this world that need to be solved.
