Details:
Formed by Chris Newman in 1980, the Portland, Oregon band that became Napalm Beach premiered at the Long Goodbye opening for The Rats. They quickly began gigging around Portland and Seattle. Seeing potential in the band, Greg Sage of the Wipers took them under his wing, recording them for his "Trap Sampler" cassette, and producing their first vinyl.
Drummer Sam Henry (Wipers, Rats) joined forces with Newman in October of 1981. In 1983 Greg Sage recorded them live at the Met in Portland and then recorded them in an unfinished house in Estacada, Oregon. The recordings were later collected on a cassette called "Rock n' Roll Hell." At this time, the scene in the northwest had come to a standstill, so Napalm Beach relocated to San Fransisco for a couple of years. However, the scene soon changed, especially with the opening of a new Portland punk club called Satyricon. Napalm Beach moved back to Portland in 1984 and began to fill clubs in Portland and Seattle.
Around this time, Newman aquired a Teac 4 track recorder and recorded the band's first album-on-cassette, "Pugsley." Soon after Newman went to Seattle to team up with Doug Reed as manager and record producer. They recorded "Napalm Beach" (aka "Teen Dream") with Sam Henry on drums and Chris's cousin Terry Gwartney on bass. This became their first full length LP on vinyl and cassette.
In 1985 Portland soundman Tom Robinson recorded Chris (guitar, bass, vocals) and Sam (drums) in a warehouse on 8-track. This became "Moving To And Fro." Newman says that he "wrote the songs with his head in the space of a 14-year old boy, inspired by that time when Music was his Sanctuary." Because it it seemed such a departure from earlier Napalm Beach recordings, "Moving To And Fro" originally came out on cassette as a Chris Newman solo recording.
In 1988 German label, "Love's Simple Dreams" released "Moving To And Fro" on vinyl, but rearranged the song order and added three Snow Bud and the Flower People (Newman's side project) tunes. Still, the German release received critical acclaim in Europe, and Napalm Beach's first European tour followed in 1989. Though some cassettes were made, "Moving To And Fro" was never formally released in the United States.
Skullman's 2009 vinyl transfer / re-release of "Moving To And Fro," features the correct songs, in the correct order, as originally conceived by Newman. These ten tracks contain eleven beautiful songs, two of them (Frenzy and Red Blooded) joined by a classic Sam Henry drum solo.
"Moving To And Fro" is a true rock album in the best sense of the word.
