Performance review:
Mojo and the Bayou Gypsies
One Night Only!
by Lisa Carver-Stvartak
From the very moment Mojo & the Bayou Gypsies took the stage, their music was strikingly different, filled with the sounds of many cultures, and infused with Bayou Boogie. Zydeco music is as multifaceted as America, from its deep rich bass rhythms and African drum beats, to the Cajun instruments that are unique to Zydeco itself.
Mojo, the flamboyant group leader and historian, took the audience on an adventure through the swamps of the bayou as he welcomed us to Louisiana; with its people and culture are so richly described in every lyric and melody.
The wonderfully talented musicians that make up this band of gypsies bring to the performance immense talent that adds to the variety and richness of this group.
As the performance began and the story unfolded, they brought down the house, reminiscent of a thunder clap, the accordion ground out long breathy chords, the pulsing rhythm of the drums rang out, the fiddle purred forcefully. The bassist held down the deep bass notes that you can feel in your chest, and the frottoir like the sounds of guiro on steroids, tinny and abrupt, adding to the richness. It is quite the treat for the senses.
As Mojo and the Gypsies performed, we get our history lesson, he shared with us the culture of the Cajun and Creole people and the musical roots of Zydeco â A house party where neighbors, family and friends gather, brought food, music and instruments too, just to enjoy each otherâs company. As you can imagine it is a feast for the ears. So many sounds wash over you, you can barely contain yourself to your seat.
Each performer had their own look, though there was a common theme, they wore clothes of purple and gold, colors synonymous with Mardi Gras. Several performers wore elaborate headdresses reminiscent of the Mardi Gras Indians native to Louisiana.
After experiencing this performance we realize that we have not just seen a musical concert, but we have received a lesson on the culture, music and history of New Orleans and the Bayou. The concert was a buffet to the senses, music you could feel, culture you could experience, and a feast of sight and sound. Mojo and the Bayou Gypsies are a truly talented group of performers.
They deliver a huge, International party!
