Details:
Active in the world of Renaissance / Pirate Festivals and Faires, the Musical Blades take a new approach with this Spring 2009 release.
Live at Pubs and Pirate-Core is a collection of songs done in a style inconsistent with, and incomparable to⦠but at the same time related, similar and interchangeable with what you would typically hear from the Musical Blades.
Itâs called Pirate-Core â But what is Pirate-Core? Well the Urban Dictionary describes it as followsâ¦
The modern genre of Pirate music sung by modern pirates who play a mix of tradtional pirate music, like accordions, pianos, drums and a man who shouts avast, and a range of modern music, like guitars, turn tables and rapping.
Hmm...
Itâs been described as a phenomenon, a cultural obsession of Pirates and Hollywood Pirates (big difference by the way). The âcoreâ in Pirate-Core has also been defined as âhard-coreâ and/or meaning that the âcoreâ, or root, of a particular groups song must be pirate driven.
The Musical Blades define Pirate-Core as any type of Music NOT consistent with what you would typically hear in the Pirate/Sailor genre of music, yet, interchangeable in the eyes/ears of the listener with what some would consider the standard, or the typical, or - âTraditionalâ
Make since? We didnât think so. Suffice to say, you will know Pirate-Core when you hear it, and this CDâs got it! Exploreâ¦.
The first five tracks are all Rocked-Up âtraditionalâ songs, but the lyrics and the vocal melodies have all been kept consistent with, or at least similar to the original tunes. A unique change that we think youâll like to these long loved favorites.
1. Mrs McGraw
2. Johnny Booger
3. 100 Years Ago
4. Captain Kidd
5. Drunken Sailor
6. Davey Jones Locker
The next four tracks are the âMusical Bladesâ as they are, the acoustic quintet that performs at festival and faires throughout the country. With one difference, this is a the live pub version of the âBladesâ. A boot leg performance, this is a bit raunchier and untamed than the normal Musical Blades, with an audience full of rum and ales!
7. Hollywood Pirate
8. Sail Away
9. Gettin Saved
10. Whiskey in the Jar
The last three tracks, listed as âBONUS Tracksâ are brand new songs for this CD. Songs you will hear us play, or maybe have already heard us play out at the festivals.
11. Derelict (Yo Ho Ho and Bottle of Rum)
12. Haul Her Away
13. Rollin Home
Nearly three years from concept to release, we hope you enjoy this CD as much as we enjoyed making it!

âWithout a doubt, what you come to the Renaissance Festival for! The finest group of Pirates, featuring some of the best music you can find. The Blades are destined to be a legend in the Renaissance circle.â

From the "Blades Blog" at musicalblades.com
If you don't know, these first six songs were written specifically for a concert that never took place. The concert, as some may recall, was called "Shipwrecked" . It was to take place in Columbia Missouri, and pirate bands, of all genre's, from all over the country, were scheduled to perform this all weekend "Pirate Woodstock" type of event. The Musical Blades (the renaissance festival act) was going to be the comedic group that would take the stage between setups of other "Pirate-Core" acts, while performing the songs that we're known for.
It was to be a Saturday night performance that "The Blades" (a rocked-up version of the Musical Blades) were to take the stage. The songs were written and arranged. The band was psyched and ready (complete with lead guitar, bass, and drums)! We even had a camera and audio crew lined up and ready for what seemed was going be the biggest Pirate event ever!
But alas, the concert was canceled due to insufficient funds. We don't blame the organizers of the event, they REALLY tried, but we did end up with several "Pirate-Core" songs that we never got to do anything with. Enter our new CD.....
"Live at Pubs and Pirate-Core" is a collection of the best Pirate-Core songs we had recorded. We then included four of the best "live" pub songs we had recorded, one of which is a song that won't be officially released until fall 2009 ("Gettin Saved"), that you may have heard us already performing out at faires.
Last but not least we then put three, brand new Musical Blades songs on it, as bonus tracks, that we're now performing out at festivals as well. We truly hope you like this CD!
