Biography of Richard D. Hegens, Jr.
First and foremost I thank God Almighty for just allowing me to share this moment with anyone who's reading this small but greatful history.
Born on 7 January 1964 (premature) to two of the most wonderful parents in the World; Richard and Viola Hegens, I began playing music at the age of 9 at church in Washington, D.C. The flautist (Anthony Thompson) at church bought his extra mouthpiece for me to start blowing on, to see if I'd like the flute or if it was just doing something my parents would waste their money on. During testimony service, I was just blowing away, making noise. By the age of 10, I was bringing my music workbook to church and practicing after church dinner in the men's room at least an hour prior to âLittle Flockâ and evening church service. Later that year, I began performing with the church band in the various church conferences throughout the States.
By the age of 13, I auditioned for the 'Youth Orchestra' on Saturday and Sundays at 'Coolidge High School' in Washington, D.C. making first chair. Shortly after that, I auditioned at the 'Duke Ellington School of the Arts' in Georgetown and made the audition in less than twenty minutes by just playing a few sounds. Not truly realizing the gift God gave me and what I was being prepared for, I took it all for granted. One day, I left my flute in the school's wall locker and by that afternoon, someone stole it.
As a young child, I did not realize the gift that God blessed me with, to perform for Him and touch those through my music ministry. I threw it all away and stopped playing. How many know that God didn't give up on me. As I began to play at different churches and functions, people began to tell me that were blessed by my playing and some of their children wanted me to teach them how to play like that. I shared with them that it was God's anointing that comes over me and I just hold the instrument. It's all for the glory of God.
I met a beautiful woman while in processing at Fort Stewart, Georgia on 8 April 1994 who quickly became my fiancée on 17 May, and the 'Queen' of my World on 10 June of the same year (1994); I played for her one time, and I became her black 'Kenny G' on the flute. She realized the musical gift that God blessed me with, and became the motivator of my dreams again. She began to expose me every chance she could at different church services and many functions we attended throughout Germany, and other places the military sent us. There was a 'Night at the Apollo' sponsored by a fraternity in Germany, she encouraged me to audition for. I auditioned that afternoon and performed that evening; the crowd was tough and very criticizing.
Because of her faith and confidence in me, we walked away with the title: 'Best Male Performer', 'Best Male Dress', and $1,000.00 as the grand prize performing 'Speak To My Heart'by Donnie McClurkin and 'Stomp!' (Remix version)by Kirk Franklin.
The next day news began to spread around the military community about this 6 foot, 5 inch, black Soldier who made a flute talk with sound.
Well the word got around to this dude named Anthony who worked in the dining facility on 'Turley Barracks'.
Mr. Anthony heard of the performance, Soldier's speaking highly about this flute player who performed at the talent show and they wanted us to meet. It was difficult at first, but to him it was no big deal since he did not see the performance.
Finally, we met at the dining facility and spoke briefly about the performance. We saw each other's family at one of restaurants in Germany, and he invited me out to his church, but it never happened.
Approximately six months later, we met again at Fort Irwin, California and he invited me and my family to their place to socialize and have groceries (food) with his family on Saturday and Sunday after church. The rest is history! Now he is one of my biggest motivators after my 'Queen'.
Now with God's grace and mercy, my 'Queen's' support and encouragement, and the family's best friend's support and encouragement, I believe that the 'Skies the Limit' where God wants to take the group 'T.A.O.' with touching His people and bringing souls to be saved using our musical gift and inspiration. All we truly want to do is perform and travel with my family and managers (Felicia and Anthony), and do God's work using my God giving talent as: 'T.A.O.' (The Anointed Ones).
We're currently under the anointing of God's prophet (Bishop Nathaniel and Pastor Valerie Holcomb) at the 'Christian House of Prayer' in Killeen, Texas. Serving under their ministry has been a spiritual growth in every aspect of my family's spiritual walk with God.
I'm currently deployed in Iraq touching souls with God's musical ministry and prayerfully with your assistance, God can use me to bring His children closer and lost souls closer to Him for that 'Great' and wonderful day when He'll return to receive His people to live with Him forever.
Thank you so much for all your support in advance and may God bless you and this country, the United States of America.
In Jesus name, amen.
