Derrick was born in Alexandria in 1960. He started singing in the church choir at the age of 5 and came to know Jesus as his personal savior at the age of 7.

Derrick is married and has two daughters. He is a member at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, Dallas, Texas, Dr. Tony Evans, Senior Pastor. He is an active member, serving as a Deacon, and singing and co-directing the various choirs.

He has been on the Nationally Syndicated television program "Bobby Jones Gospel" with his former group Kindred. He has also recorded with National Recording Artist, Kirk Franklin. He has also shared the stage with Beverly Crawford, Larnell Harris, John Gray and many others.

He knows his purpose in life. To sing for the Lord and inspire and encourage listeners to sing for and to the Lord with a purpose.
