Details:
It may sound a little flippant, but I took up playing the panpipes to give myself something to do while I walk and while I wait for buses. I don't drive, and I resented the time lost in walking from one place to another, and waiting for buses. My first instrument is actually the piano, but it is not very portable and my arms were getting sore carrying it down the street. ;) I took up playing the bamboo flute, but it's hard to see where you are going when you play unless you want to get a sore neck. Also, there is the cold winter climate here in Winnipeg, which meant that playing in the winter was short and sweet. The panpipes, on the other hand, don't require the fingers - practically the only melodic instrument which doesn't - so they can be played in the winter too. One can also look straight ahead while playing and avoid walking into people, trees, lamp posts and the like.
I've been playing the panpipes for something over 10 years, and I often joke that I will eventually play for the entire city of Winnipeg. People are generally quite supportive: they often wave from their cars, or ask me questions about the instrument or the music I am playing. And yes.... I do get kids following me on occasion, just like the Pied Piper. ;)
