On his new album, Hannes De Kassian Trio â3,â De Kassian has stripped his music down to its bare essential, emerging with a work that is authentic, complex and original.

About Hannes De Kassian Trio â3â

Released in 2009, the aptly named â3 â is Hannes De Kassianâs third CD, and his second foray into a trio. Featuring Gene Torres on bass and Joris Dudli on drums, the self-produced album is a product of De Kassianâs sharpened vision a fusion of his European roots with funk-infused jazz.

That fusion is present in the albumâs opening track, â125 Jive.â De Kassianâs guitar weaves masterfully with Torresâs bottom-heavy bass. Dudli punctuates the music propulsively, pushing the action, a heady dose of jazz and funk. âI live in Harlem,â De Kassian explains, âand I wanted â125 Jiveâ to have that kind of energy and buzz.â
âUndercurrentâ has an off beat sensibility â ethereal in tone, the song shows De Kassianâs comfort in playing with more open forms. âItâs not your regular spin of eight bars to a melody,â De Kassian says. âItâs more like painting a soundscape.â

For De Kassian, music has always been a search for something more. âThe thing about music,â he declares, âis that itâs more a life philosophy than anything else. Some are lucky enough to make a living off of it. But usually, the reward lies in making the music and getting deeper into it.â Hannes De Kassian Trioâs â3â is the sound of that philosophy; rewarding for the skill, heart and spirit with which it has been conceived and recorded, and continually fulfilling for those willing to get deeper into its grooves.
