When I set out to make this album, I wanted to reflect the rich and uplifting variety of music, spanning cabaret, jazz, torch songs, musical theatre and Argentinian tango, that I have been lucky enough to perform.

I was drawn to the lyric âDance Me To The End Of Loveâ as dance was my first passion. The image of surrendering to the ecstasy of love and dancing into oblivion. Wonderful !

This is an album about love and covers just about every aspect of it and even if you are not an incurable romantic as I am, I hope youâll agree that this is a beautiful collection of songs.

With the help of superb musicians and intimate and evocative arrangements, we have brought together what is essentially quite a diverse selection of songs, with a generous range of moods and colours, and created a cohesive, unique and I hope enjoyable album.


MARIA KESSELMAN

Maria trained at the Arts Educational School, The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and The Royal College of Music, studying singing with Marion Studholme, repertoire with Robert Sutherland and Piano with Peter Element, gaining her ARCM and dip. RCM diplomas. She maintains a varied performing career spanning musical theatre, theatre, opera, concert, recording, cabaret, and dance.

In musical theatre and theatre, Mariaâs credits include numerous lead roles: âChristineâ opposite Michael Crawford in âThe Phantom of the Operaâ at Her Majestyâs Theatre; âJenny Lindâ in âBarnumâ;, âMaria Vittoriaâ, in âWhich Witchâ at the Piccadilly Theatre; âRuthieâ in The Royal National Theatre production of âLady in the Darkâ;, âLaundressâ in âYermaâ at The National Theatre Studio;âElizaâ in âMy Fair Ladyâ with Tony Anholt and Reg Marsh, New Zealand; âDeanna Durbinâ in âTwo Smart Girlsâ at âThe Queen Elizabeth Hall and âMariaâ in âThe Sound of Musicâ at âThe Everymanâ. Maria also received critical acclaim and a âTime Outâ award for her performance of âMelinda Coverdaleâ in the Ruth Rendall thriller âA Judgement in Stoneâ, with Sheila Hancock at The Lyric Theatre Hammersmith.

In opera, Maria has also performed widely .Roles including: âMusettaâ in âLa Bohemeâ and âDespinaâ in âCosi fan tuttiâ, in London and Amsterdam; âMusettaâ in the film version of âLa Bohemeâ, for Channel 5; and â Maeâ in âStreet Sceneâwith The English National Opera. Maria also featured in The Royal Opera House documentary âTrouble at the Houseâ for BBC 2 singing âVissi dâArteâ.

As an established concert performer, Maria has given solo performances at venues across the UK and Europe: including The Royal Festival Hall, The Queen Elizabeth Hall, The Royal Albert Hall and The Barbican. She has sung and recorded with leading orchestras including The Royal Philharmonic, The English National Orchestra and The BBC Concert Orchestra and has given recitals for The English National Opera at The London Coliseum. Maria has made numerous TV and radio appearances, and is a regular star singer on âFriday Night is Music Nightâ and âThe Steve Race Showâ for BBC Radio 2. She also performs as soloist for Raymond Gubbay at the Barbican, Bridgewater Hall Manchester and Birmingham Symphony Hall, âThe Last Night of the Promsâ open air concerts with The Royal Philharmonic at High Clear Castle, Battle Abbey, Castle Howard, Calke Abbey, Lydiard House and Longleat. Maria has also starred in national concert tours of âA Viennese Strauss Galaâ and âBeyond Phantomâ. Her solo choral repertoire includes âAfrican Sanctusâ, Mass in Blueâ,â Bach Magnificatâ, âMessiahâ, âHaydnâs Nelsonâs Massâ, and the concert version of âPorgy and Bessâ.

As a recording artist, Maria has released two solo albums, âFlightâ, and her latest album âDance Me To The End of Loveâ. As an experienced cabaret artist, Maria has performed her one woman show at many of Londonâs top hotels and cabaret venues, including: âThe Café Royal; The Savoy; Grosvenor House; The Dorchester; The Ritz; The Hilton; The Connaught Rooms; and âPizza on the Parkâ. Maria formed her own production company in 2002, and devised, produced and starred in a new show, âIn a Sentimental Moodâ, the songs of Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Cole Porter, for the Gordon Craig Theatre. She has her own travelling opera company, âOpera Masqueradeâ, performing opera concerts and shows for corporate events.

As a dancer and at the start of her career Maria played the role of âThe Russian Girlâ in âDeath in Veniceâ at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and The Aldeburgh Festival, and also danced in âThe Nutcrackerâ at The Royal Festival Hall with The Festival Ballet. Maria is also a leading Argentinean Tango dancer and she sings two of her favourite tangos on this album.
