CHRIS SAUNDERS, nicknamed âBig Skinâ in grade school, is a prolific singer-songwriter (cornet and flugal horn)and has played with / fronted many bands, cultivating a style that has one foot in jazz but embraces peripheral influences of cabaret, blues, rock, and experimental music. With pinch of Howlinâ Wolf and a dash of Tom Waits / Louis Armstrong/Dr. John and Tony Bennett.Chrisâs forte is his gift of comedy, a sense of melodic beauty, and his immense reservoir of soul. His ability to inhabit characters, mimic voices and sound, and his mercurial improvisation abilities are astonishing. Chris has been on stage, in studio and/or played with the likes of Michael Bloomfield, Tom Waits, many of the original Sons of Champlain, Vernon Black, Kit Walker, Paul McCandless and many of the wonderfully talented local musicians in the greater bay area. Chris started performing at age 10.He performed at the Fillmore in 1967 and impressed Bill Graham who said, âYou should be singing with Ellingtonâ. One of the moments that kept him going to this day is when Howlinâ Wolf and his band shook his hand after the gig with high compliments and words of encouragement.
