Details:
A Taste of the Crooked Road was a two year long project. It started when Susan Justice shared with me a poem she wrote. She had written several of them and desired to put them all to music and produce her own album. M-OO-N-S-H-I-N-E was the first one she shared with me and I became interested and put music to it. I also put music to other poems of hers, three which are featured on this album, "Welcome to Franklin County", "Appalachian Mountain Folk", and "M-OO-N-S-H-I-N-E".
Here husband, Lane Rakes, wrote two poems of his own and I put music to them. "Moonshine Cliff" and "I"m the Son".
Steve Shively also of Ferrum VA, put music to "Memories of Shootin" Creek" another Susan Justice and Lane Rakes poem.
All of her and her husbandâs poems reflect the way they were raised along the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. They now live in Endicott. A small place near the Blue Ridge Mountains, in Franklin County Va. Which is located on VA State Route 40, which is part of the Virginia Heritage Music Trail, "The Crooked Road".
"Handsome Endicott Guy" was a poem written by Cathy Atkins, an employee of Franklin County, VA, and is based on a true story.
"Driving Down Route 40" is a song written by the late Tommy Quinn, and has facts in it that was very true in its day.
For more info, feel free to call "Old Craft Shop Road Studios" at 540-365-6285 in Ferrum VA. 35 miles south of Roanoke VA.
