Andrew Kreider was born and raised in London, England '" growing up caught between the sounds of the English âfolk-baroqueâ scene and new wave musician poets like Elvis Costello. Throw in the influence of Canadians Joni Mitchell and Bruce Cockburn, then stir in the upheaval of a move Midwestern Indiana in his 20s, and you get the fertile soil for some first-class songwriting with a âtransatlantic drawl.â
Today, Kreider splits his time between pastoring a Mennonite church in Elkhart, IN, and writing and performing his music. And while he doesnât explicitly identify himself as a âChristian artist,â his deep Christian faith lies at the heart of his work. Kreider intentionally refers to himself as a "bi-vocational musician" - a poet and pastor who finds joy in addressing the spiritual alongside the remarkable and the banal in everyday life.
The songs on âSing Something Prettyâ were written and recorded in 2003-2004, and showcase Kreiderâs musical and lyrical range. At the heart of the album is the humorous âMy car wonât goâ '" heard in 2005 on NPRâs âCar Talk.â By turns impassioned and playful, he moves from the biting political commentary of âThe Manâ to the playful pet-love song âPuppy Love,â from the brooding of âThe Bladeâ to the wistful romance of âIn the Evening.â While not a âChristian albumâ (whatever that means any more), a strong thread of Christian faith is woven through the album '" from the opening âBetter look outâ through the spooky musings of âWhy are you lookingâ to the gospel-tinged âWho is so great,â to the cut-loose rocker âBless the Lordâ which brings the album to an end.
With strong melodies, carefully crafted lyrics and understated playing, Kreiderâs songs reward repeated listening.
