Kristin is so excited about his debut CD, he can hardly believe it. â Iâve played bass on and/or produced other peoples projects, and it feels great to be able to finally express myself! â
Here is his description of the style of music on his CD. â I call it straight ahead honest rock. Itâs kind of like Stone Temple Pilots meets The Black Crowes with a 70âs raw slice of Humble Pie. I recorded it mostly with just a couple of tube condenser mics, and vintage tube amps. Itâs definitely a tribute to the classic rock days of recording and I love it! â
The Bio: Kristin started singing and performing at a young age along with his mothersâ piano accompaniment. â Yeah, my mom had me singing Disney tunes and Christmas carols at churches and parties when I was a toddler. She also taught me not to get nervous till after the show. I still get a little anxious before a gig, but afterwards Iâm almost a wreck. â
In the fifth grade, he needed to make a choice of band instruments that would shape the future for him. â So there I am, standing in a music store in Richmond Virginia, and Mr. Burley is trying to convince me to play a more melodic instrument like the trombone. I wanted to play the drums so bad, but I trusted him, and Iâm glad now that I was able to learn the bass clef. â
In the ninth grade, he was introduced to an instrument that would change his life in a most positive way. â My friend Kevin Brackett had his buddyâs bass, and he showed me how to play some Led Zeppelin riffs on it. I took it home for the weekend and was blown away at what this big guitar could do. I started playing along to Zep and The Who records and couldnât believe it. I finally found something I was pretty good at. â
He received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music, and was on his way to Boston to further study the art of bass playing. â I loved the atmosphere and there were so many talented and cool students there. However, I felt like I was in math and science class. To me, music comes from the soul and is emotional, not just a calculated equation. So, I took my mid terms and split. Of course my girlfriend breaking up with me over the phone 1,000 miles away didnât really help my unhappiness at the time either. â
With a little bit of attitude, and a lot of drive, he dove head first into taking gigs that provided him the opportunity to travel. â I love performing on the road and meeting all kinds of people. I enjoy picking up peoples accents, and learning a little history of the area. One time at a diner in Minnesota, I was practicing our waitressâs accent and she must have thought I was making fun of her. She âaccidentallyâ dropped my food on me. Oh, jeez dere must have slipped. â
Now Kristin is enthusiastic about performing his original material. â I have always been that bass player guy that hangs back with the drummer and sings every once in awhile. But now I get to sing my own songs my way. Itâs kinda scary puttinâ your heart on your sleeve and being so open, but itâs also very liberating. â
