Description:
Kelli Rae Powell is an old-timey albeit timely cabaret-style bad girl.
13 MP3 Songs
FOLK: Folk Blues, BLUES: Acoustic Blues
Details:
"We learn once and for all that size isn't everything. With her little guitar and diminutive stature, Kelli Rae's performance is kick-ass big. A cabaret bad-girl's persona sets the theme for many of her songs, yet you know this is a vehicle for metaphor about all our desires and social human folly. Challenging songs, both in variety among songs and within songs, and difficult melodies are performed with little effort. Her voice is to say the least very strong, unique and one of the best out there."
-Gabriel Levitt from Jezebelmusic.com
"Kelli's got a phenomenal voice and she gets some very complex songs out of that ukulele. She's able to go back and forth between songs that emphasize the more irreverent and slightly campy qualities of the instrument, such as "Magical Mystical Thing," and songs that are more edgy and romantic where the ukulele is played more like a harp or a zither. Very refreshing."
-Rebecca Capua from Jezebelmusic.com
[Kelli Rae Powell asked one of her favorite writers to write her one-sentence discription of her music for her, but he is a good friend and is making her do it on her own. That way she can grow and learn from this experience. Instead of growing and learning, however, Kelli Rae copied his instruction and pasted it in her bio below:]
"I think what you may want to get across with your little blurb is that your songs have a sort of timeless, yet timely quality to them. When I hear them, they sound both contemporary and period - there's something old-timey, but also post-modern to them and that dichotomy is just really envigorating. Mysterious. Swanky. Swell, even! Wow, look at me aimlessly stab at the English language!...'Kelli Rae's music is like funness and pain living together, but not like a reality TV show' I'm obviously a genius! (hope you read my self-depricating tone there)...Let 'em know you're a post-modern, yet old-fashioned musician, if you take my meaning."
