Description:
The Keel Brothers consider that their music is deeply rooted in their father Jim Keelâs generation and his musical tastes, drawing on selections from the earliest Stanley Brothers, Hank Williams, Doc and Merle Watson, Classic Country Gentlemen
13 MP3 Songs
COUNTRY: Traditional Country, COUNTRY: Bluegrass
Details:
This studio recording captures a major aspect of Larry Keelâs formation as a master flatpicking guitarist and a preserver of Appalachian and classic American Country music. It was Larryâs older brother Gary (older by 12 years) who taught him to play the guitar at age 7, and bought him his first instrument. The âKeel Brothersâ Duet Guitar project is the long overdue recording that finally grants the listener a glimpse into the fantastic family energy that launched young Larry into virtuoso playing by the age of 17.
The Keel Brothers consider that their music is deeply rooted in their father Jim Keelâs generation and his musical tastes, drawing on selections from the earliest Stanley Brothers (whose hometown is near Clintwood, Virginia- the hometown of the Keels), Hank Williams, Doc and Merle Watson, Classic Country Gentlemen, fiddle tunes and flatpicking guitar tunes and old ballads that were always a part of the weekly âjam sessionsâ of the Keelsâ large circle of Bluegrass picker-friends. Moreover, the Keels have always applied their highly developed musical sense to genres and styles beyond traditional Bluegrass and Country music. Included in The Keel Brothers recording project is a theme from the classic movie/musical âSeven Brides for Seven Brothers,â a melody from the Swing era, and a tune off the hit album from the 1960âs, â101 Guitarsâ. Throughout the recording the listener can truly hear the genetic bond that melds Larry and Garyâs tone and timing into a seamless whole; they really sound like one person playing two guitars at the same time. This project represents the finest in guitar duet arrangement, but the nature of the Keelsâ concept and the deep connection that these musicians have towards each other and to their choice material here distinguish this recording from all other guitar albums to date.
