Details:
skyhook are an exciting collaboration of three of the finest acoustic musicians in Sheffield, England. Cath James, Martin Harwood and Eoin Teather play traditional tunes and songs from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton Island, plus some highly acclaimed self-penned compositions.
skyhook are characterised by breathtaking twin fiddles combined with sublime guitar, bouzouki and voice. They shift seamlessly between driving dance music and spine-tingling songs, and play with a joy and precision that's hard to match.
Martin, on fiddle, guitar and bouzouki: previously with Caravanserai, Martin has played throughout Europe and America and had the honour of playing for Nelson Mandela in 2000.
Cath, on fiddle and viola, was a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Tradition Award in 1995 and was also shortlisted in the inaugural Niel Gow International Fiddle Composition Award in 2008, with her tune 'Then & Now'.
Eoin, on guitar, bouzouki and voice, is an exquisite accompanist and singer-songwriter with a voice that silences rooms. Eoin has played on stage with some of the biggest names in Irish traditional music, including the master fiddle player Tommy Peoples.
This CD was "Album of the week" on Celtic Music Radio (Oct 2008)
Here's what some people have said about the album...
"Intelligently realised Celticry from bright young Sheffield-based trio making great capital out of just twin-fiddles (Cath James, Martin Harwood) and guitar/bouzouki/vocals (Eoin Teather). With its as-live vitality, mixing Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton tunes with some of Cath's (and three songs), this set is highly musical and guaranteed to bring a smile to face and feet"
fRoots magazine
"Very, very fine playing indeed...destined for greatness" Lester Simpson
"Super stuff... a beautifully produced CD" Genevieve Tudor BBC Radio Shropshire
"Beautiful... very, very talented" Frank Hennessy BBC Radio Wales
"a damned fine collection of composed and traditional tunes/songs with various 'celtic'
influences displaying more than a little innovation" Folk and Roots
"...a beautiful piece of work. I love this album!" Fiddle On magazine
"...fabulous Celtic folk with a mixture of glorious abandon and respect for the music's traditions ... lovely energising listening." Musician magazine
"...the music on this CD simply makes life better..." Tykes news
"...After listening some time to the powerful sound of Skyhook's twin fiddles, you certainly get hooked. However, there are worse addictions." Folk World - Folk, World & Roots Music Online Magazine
