Gabe Noel, born in Chicago in 1985, began his musical studies on the cello at the age of 4 and bass at age 11. His numerous awards and honors include: 2002 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Award for his work with the Stephane Grappelli Tribute Trio, 2003 NFAA National arts finalist and Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellow, principal bass with the Chicago Youth Symphony in 2002/03, 2005 Thornton mentor grant to study with legend Herbie Hancock, and 2006 recipient of the University of Southern Californiaâs Thornton Protégé Career Grant for his electric ensemble, Quiet Orchestra. Gabe has participated in the Aspen Music Festival, Henry Mancini Institute, International Workshop for Creative Music in Banff Canada, and The Lima Jazz Festival in Lima, Peru. He has toured and performed with Fareed Haque, Alan Pasqua, Clarence Penn, Shelly Berg, Orbert Davis, and Bruce Formanâ and currently performs with Ascendant, Hour of the Shipwreck, Jessica Fichot, 1 2 3 Halarsuch!, among others. Gabe scored the independent film Walk a Mile (Julie Pifer, 2006), art installations Reverie and Urban Nocturne (Tyler Sharp, 2005-06), and has written for bass ensembles. He is currently composing Themes for double-bass and String Orchestra to premier in 2007. His first recording, âSix Thirty,â featuring guitarist Fareed Haque and Grammy winning drummer Clarence Penn has just been released. A recording of Quiet Orchestra will be released this November. Gabe will be a senior this fall at USC where he is pursuing a BA in Humanities and studying with John Clayton. He currently resides in Los Angeles.
