Details:
Gabe Cummins started his musical career at the age of 13, playing his guitar in blues bands around the Upstate New York area. At 15, he headlined at the New York State Blues Festival with the New York Blues All Star Big Band to a captivated audience at the legendary Dinosaur Blues Club. While still a junior in high school, his stylistic interests quickly turned to jazz after purchasing his first, of soon to be many, Wes Montgomery records.
His interest in jazz led Gabe to attend to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where upon entering he received Berklee's Best Scholarship. Gabe quickly established himself among the elite guitar players in the highly competitive guitar program at Berklee. His hard work led to the receipt of Berklee's Achievement Scholarship for Guitar Performance.
During his four-year tenure at Berklee, Gabe had the privilege of studying under Mick Goodrick, Wayne Krantz, Jon Finn, Hal Crook, as well as Rick Peckham and Larry Baione. While still a student, Gabe's reputation as an excellent reader led to the position of staff accompanist for Berklee's vocal department. He also performed extensively with Berklee's talented faculty and student body including performances with Victor Mendoza, Giovanni Hidalgo, Arturo Sandoval, Dave Liebman, Gary Burton, Joe Lovano, Hiromi, Rick Peckham and Dennis Montgomery.
After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Berklee, Gabe moved to Ithaca, NY where he maintained an impressive student roster and regular correspondence lessons with world-renowned jazz educator, Charlie Banacos. During his time in Ithaca, Gabe embraced Upstate New York's bebop tradition, performing extensively with Danny D'Imperio and Steve Brown.
Wanting to sink his teeth into more contemporary styles of performing, Gabe moved to New York City in January of 2004. He is currently an adjunct Professor of guitar at New York University, where he is in pursuit of a Masters Degree in Performance and Composition. Since moving to New York City Gabe has performed, recorded, and worked with some of the biggest names in jazz including John Scofield, Lenny Pickett, Gil Goldstein, Chris Potter, Kenny Werner, Rich Perry, Ralph Alessi, Tony Moreno, Steve Lucas, Jeff Andrews, Russell Malone, Brad Shepik, George Garzone, and John Allred. He is also very involved in New York's downtown Rock and R&B seen having performed with some of the areas top acts including Vinnie Moore, Marly Hornik, Popa Chubby, Debbie Davies, Chrissi Poland, and Pete Tufel. Gabe has also garnered acclaim for his truly unique writing style. He has composed commissioned works from the New School and written jingles for Nike Apparel.
