IN THE MAELSTROM is the music of Kevin Karlstrom.

Born in a small town in northern British Columbia, Canada, Kevin left home at 15. Still a young man he began a solo journey that took him around the world to more than twenty-five countries. It was a journey that grounded him in his desire to create music.

A college music major on his return from his travels, Kevin felt a need to make up for lost time. He threw himself headlong into his studies.

âI became enthralled with 19th century art song composers, especially Franz Schubert.â says Karlstrom. âSchubert's cycles, especially Winterreise had a deep effect on me. The songs are so beautiful, powerful and dramatic, yet so tortured.â

Like many of his early musical influences, the music of IN THE MAELSTROM really deals with the human heart at its most exposed.
And like the name suggests, it will sweep you into an intense musical maelstrom of orchestrated rock, and seize you on a visceral level.

The layered orchestral textures and contrapuntal choral arrangements punctuated with heavy guitars draws few comparisons in popular music today and can best be described in word: epic. It is music that has been stretched far beyond rockâs traditional four-piece instrumentation.

"I think like a lot of artists, that songs are a kind of catharsis for me. Most of my songs are somewhat autobiographical. I lost my brother in a motorcycle accident almost eight years ago. Songs like "The Dream Awakes", and "All Things Must Meet the Sea" are about that loss and separation. "Soul of the Living" has a similar theme to âThe Dream Awakesâ: our impermanence and the struggle to make sense of it all. "You're here one moment, the next you're gone. We cling to this space and time...until the dream awakes." and "We're caught in a mystery we can't solve... and the clock's still ticking on us all."

To Kevin, the theme of impermanence seems to permeate throughout much of his work, directly or indirectly.

âIn The Maelstrom is a really a metaphor for our human experience, searching for meaning in the midst of strife. I strove to be very honest about my experience and what I was feeling even if those emotions were very difficult and painful. To be able to transform a painful emotion into something beautiful is what creates meaning for me in my music.â
