Details:
David Key's "Four Directions Meditation" is a celebration of the energies and gifts of the four directions of East, South, West, and North, as well as the seasons connected with the directions. Native American flutes, clay flutes, original chants, gentle synthesizers, and the heartbeat of a Deer hide frame drum are combined with nature sounds like ocean waves and a summer storm.
Each track of this four-track CD is a medley of sounds and selections that connect the listener to the intended direction. Each medley can be enjoyed on its own for a focused meditation on that direction, or the four can be experienced as a complete meditative whole.
David, a resident of Hampstead, NC, is a Therapeutic Sound Artist, creating original works in the medium of sound. David is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, performing on a variety of wooden flutes, frame drum, and soprano saxophone. He is a composer, performer, and sound healer, using the art of music to do everything from playing at weddings to providing individual Sound Medicine⢠sessions. A classically trained saxophonist with a Master's degree in music, Davidâs ability to combine classical training with intuitive improvisation is unique. A favorite artistic activity of his is to walk through art galleries, improvising sounds and music inspired by the artwork he sees.
David has created improvised chamber music in the duo Starling, performed original Latin-influenced jazz in the Joe Parillo Ensemble, done a concert tour of South Korea performing with the Rhode Island Saxophone Quartet, and performed as a soloist at The Kripalu Institute. A 2004 Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar, David traveled to Japan to study the culture and educational system of that country. While there, he re-connected with his long-held desire to learn the shakuhachi bamboo flute.
David has been creative as a teacher of music, nurturing young musicians from kindergarten through college. Along the way, he wrote a textbook published by Prentice Hall, "The Creation and Re-Creation of Music." He presently teaches privately, and at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC.
David performs as a soloist at libraries, healing centers, art galleries, and workshops, at concert venues, for yoga classes, and for weddings and other ceremonies. His original compositions leave his listeners relaxed and energized at the same time, and his welcoming style helps his audiences have fun with new sounds and new experiences.
