The Don Meehan Project
"He Hopes"
Featuring the songs and sounds of Don Meehan
GOOGLE Don Meehan with names like Johnny Cash, Chet Atkins, Skip Spence, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, The Manhattans, Charlie McCoy, Janis Ian, Simon and Garfunkel, George Jones, and Bruce Springsteen, to name a few, and Donâs name appears on the credits of millions of CDs by these artists.
In addition to his chores at Columbia Records and Sony Music, Don has done his "projects" in the garage, the basement, the 4th bedroom, the kitchen (and the sink), the bathroom and the attic.
The Don Meehan Project began during Donâs fabulous recording-engineering career. When he wasnât making a hit record for others at Columbia and Sony, he was always experimenting with his own voice. He once recorded Handelâs "Hallelujah Chorus", singing sixty voices himself acappella, in three vocal octaves. And now he is putting a rock band behind it. He has recorded on this CD, a world record 233 voice âChorus of Oneâ once more singing all the voices himself on "America The Beautiful", to commemorate in 2009, 233 years since 1776. Don has had at least twenty singles released on various labels, and an album "The Song and Dance Man" now in the Smithsonian Folkways Collection.
A most memorable event in Donâs life was being part of the story of boxer Rubin âHurricaneâ Carter, wrongfully convicted when his career was on the rise, and he could have been Champion of the World. Don co-produced, recorded and mixed the now classic Bob Dylan recording of "Hurricane". That experience left an indelible print on Don and has had a lasting effect on him to always help those in need and cheer for the underdog. Now, itâs his own nephew, Danny Meehan, wrongly convicted in a Texas court. Don spent two years investigating the case and found new evidence that may free his nephew. The results of that investigation was inspiration for his song, "Courtroom Brutality".
Multi-talented Don Meehan does it all on this CD as producer-songwriter-musician-arranger-singer-recording engineer-mixer. Don has been singing since the age of six, and was born and raised in Beaumont, Texas, where his country roots sprang from. In his teens he learned the guitar and bass, and sang and played with all the country bands in the Southeast Texas area. While in junior and high school he played with the Lamar College dance band. After high school, he went to New York and landed a contract with RCA Victor, who set him up on the "Louisiana Hayride". The Army cut that short, but at least he entertained the troops and recorded on Victor.
Don's favorite story is the one he tells of that Victor session where Chet Atkins was the leader. He felt it would really sound cool if they modulated and went up a half tone on the second verse, so he made that suggestion. No, no, no a thousand times no from Chet. It was as if he was from some alien planet, or putting a curse on Country music. But it would have probably been some kind of first. In fact, Don thinks it would be really interesting to search for and make a big deal out of the first country record ever to modulate up a half tone.
After the Army he studied audio and recording and went back to New York. He built a home recording studio and did demos for publishers and songwriters and played with bands. He was hired by the United Nations recording department for his editing skills, and that job led to a long stay at New York Columbia Records. He has garnered at least thirty Gold and Platinum awards as an engineer, and as an artist has had about twenty single records released and an album, "The Song And Dance Man", that is now in the Smithsonian Collection.
