D. B. Norton (Edward Arnold) buys a Newspaper called The Bulletin and renames it The New Bulletin, a Streamlined Newspaper for a streamlined era. The New Managing Editor is told to cleanout the deadwood and starts firing many people from the Newspaper including Ann Mitchell (Barbara Stanwyck) who pleads with the Editor to keep her on stating that she has a Mother and two kids she support but the Editor just tells her he needs Fireworks instead of the fluff she usually writes for her column but tells her to make sure she gets her last story in before the end of the day. Determined to keep her job she writes a story about receiving a Suicide letter from a John Doe that plans on jumping off the City Hall roof blaming the slimey politicians. The editor rehires her to keep the story going and hire an unemployed homeless man to play the part which starts a political movement.
