Even as The Beatles held the music world hostage at large, by the mid â60âs, bands coalesced in the South purely to emulate the sounds of Otis Redding, Arthur Alexander, Jerry Butler, Billy Stewart, The Impressions, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Little Anthony & Imperials and countless other ânational spotlight soul â artists of the day. Many covered the well-known hits of their idols, but there was an astounding amount of originality exhibited in song writing and arranging as well. It is a safe bet to say that many of the tunes found in this fine series, would have been ânationalâ hit recordings as well had they been represented by major labels that could have provided the proper exposure and promotion.
