Details:
The amazing polyrhythmic styles of percussionist Chris Conley, coupled with the solid, pocket groove of bassist Jeff Hatley comprise the dynamic foundation upon which guitarist Will McBride fluidly builds the fusion of jazz, funk and pop styles that make The Will McBride Group one of the finest jazz/funk trios in central NC.
Trifecta, the debut release from the Raleigh, NC based Will McBride Group uniquely fuses jazz, funk, and pop and contains some very impressive writing and arranging skills. This the bandâs first CD and it delivers on their slogan of âsatisfying your cool sideâ¦and moving your backsideâ. Trifecta is evidence that this very talented trio creates music that is both intelligent and fun.
Trifecta boasts six well-crafted original tunes with fine instrumentation, articulate lyrics, and the groove that has become a WMG trademark. These songs avoid cliché and over-used subjects while expertly employing a unique breadth of styles. Each song makes its own statement:
Picture Windows is a stream-of-consciousness social commentary about the ârat raceâ, questioning the value in itâ¦all with a permeating funk groove. The hooky âcall and answerâ vocal between guitarist Will McBride and drummer Chris Conley is hard to forget, and the swing bridge is an unexpectedly nice twist.
Mine ventures into the âpopâ genre using catchy chorus vocals. It tells a story of a dream about an unlikely couple that seems to become manifest. The rhythmic nature of the vocals and selection of very descriptive lyrics is very cool. The song displays a delightful âgumboâ of several obvious musical influences throughout the tune. Intriguingly clever!
Keep On Keepinâ On is built on an infectious and very spacious hip-hop groove from Conley and bassist Jeff Hatley. McBride adds powerful vocals along with an imaginative guitar work. The lyrics implore the protagonist not to let circumstances defeat him (or her).
Blue Mex snatches you like one of those electromagnetic roller coasters. You can feel it coming, but the acceleration still exhilarates you. Weaving in and out of Conleyâs polyrhythmic foundation, guitar and bass from McBride and Hatley interplay masterfully. The bridgeâs echoey swells are a nice counterpoint, giving the listener a reprieve before the energy picks up again. Caliente!!
Dichotomy is an excellently-written swing jazz song whose well-executed lyrics implore a teenager, who seems prone to making poor decisions through bad advice and parental apathy, to decide to live up to his true potential. In the midst of this masterfully written tune, McBride delivers an excellent melodic guitar lead while the rhythm changes to a subtle half-time feel.
Hat Dance, an instrumental that punches you in the face with hot latin-spiced feel. Hatley and Conley set a serious groove from the outset, while the guitar melody dances on this muscular foundation. This song is pure feel and is a very entertaining tune.
In addition to the fine original tracks, Trifecta also contains excellent arrangements of five classic jazz and pop tunes, including:
a frenetically powerful interpretation of Duke Ellingtonâs Caravan,
a smoothly traditional jazz-trio version of Take The A Train,
a smokinâ instrumental rendition of Steely Danâs Josie,
a fun and bouncy arrangement of Stevie Wonderâs Sir Duke,
an amazingly unique performance of Earth, Wind & Fireâs Got To Get You Into My Life
Trifecta is an excellent demonstration of the musical capability of this imaginative and talented trio. The CD grabs your attention at the outset and takes you on a musical journey full of twists and turns. It is a fine recording full of inventive songs and musical creativity. It is a must-hear!
