Details:
Dipped in the cold baptism of bare personal experience, Matt Mackey 's songs are a testament to both his down south upbringing and the many roads he has since walked. Born to a preacher in Missouri, by age 2 he was singing in church, and by age 6 was learning music from the greats in Memphis. After years of traveling solo, Matt landed as the frontman for Six Chasing Seven. When the call of the road got too strong, Matt packed up his guitar and headed for Europe. From country to country and street corner to street corner, his mind and his music were swollen from the fever of culture. After many moons and overcoming a tough bout with addiction, Matt returned home, ready to make the music he had spent his life trying to find. On his full band debut, These Tracks, Mackey showcases two distinctly different sides of his music: the neo-soul frontman and the intimate singer/songwriter. On the Northbound half of the record, the Bill Withers inspired arrangements are brought to life by the rhythm section of Josh Robinson (Matt Wertz, Dave Barnes, Bebo Norman) on drums and Matt Mangano (John Mayer, Dave Barnes) on bass, along with renowned keyboardist Gabe Dixon (Paul McCartney, O.A.R., Alison Krauss). The full band tracks on the album journey down diverse musical and ideological paths, from bayou-funk-rock ("Telephone Line") and anthemic contemplations of world affairs ("A Lot to Learn"), to lost love ("One Last Cigarette"), with stops along the way at renewal ("Blessed Are the Broken") and a sing out loud mandolin-laden tune about God's grace ("Tear It Down"). The remaining acoustic tracks on These Tracks are more Bob Dylan than modern day singer-songwriter, and reflect on "living a life that you plan to regret" ("Simplehearted") and loving unconditionally ("Only For You"), as well as Mackey's heartfelt interpretation of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." With the heart-rending honesty of a closed door songwriter and soul-clenching grit that comes from years of leaving it all on stage, Matt Mackey is poised to take anyone willing on his musical journey with him, guitar strapped to his back the whole way.
