âThe duo combines creativity, expression and passion in an intoxicating way.â Akustik Gitarre
âMara & David are the new acoustic dream team.â Melodie & Rhythmus
Mara & David are more than just an outstanding singer/songwriter duo. With their second album, Once We Were Gods, the singer and her guitarist present their very own mixture of pop, contemporary world music, jazz and folk, and this, as they quite rightly put it in their adopted city of Dresden: of world-class quality.
With their second album, Once We Were Gods¸ they easily outdid themselves, topping the standard they set on their debut album, Sixteen Secrets. Davidâs guitar playing communicates delicately and hauntingly at once with Maraâs warm, soulful, yet crystal clear voice. Maraâs voice is insistent, even demanding in one moment, and then in the next comes around with a warmth you never would have suspected just a second before.
Davidâs guitar playing is as virtuoso as it is perfect, above all itâs always at the same emotional level as the songs he enriches with a myriad of original facets. âWhen he plays the guitar, David becomes one with his instrument. He plays unfiltered, full of untamed energy and vitality,â says Mara von Ferne about David Sick.â
Mara von Ferne and David Sick met during their studies at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden. Although in light of the fact that there were only 600 students the chances were fairly good that their paths would cross, â For a long time we just didnât even notice each otherâ adds Mara von Ferne. Thatâs most likely because Mara was studying jazz and pop vocals while David was studying guitar and world music. It was more of a coincidence that they finally met outside the university and started writing songs together in 2005, merging their various styles of pop, jazz, and world music spiced with rocking sequences. Their musical influences are widely varied, running from Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos and Björk to Ani DiFranco, Steve Reich and Radiohead, all the way to the Smashing Pumpkins, Pat Metheny, Sonic Youth and Pearl Jam.
The song lyrics on Once We Were Gods plumb the emotional highs and lows of human relationships, and were all, without exception, penned by Mara von Ferne. Closeness and separation, pain and wonder, curiosity and disappointment are the themes of the current production. The two of them find themselves on an expedition here, one on which they never give up the longing to reach a final destination, as so hauntingly and delicately expressed in the title song: âAnd weâll never stop yearning for somewhere to arriveâ.
Mara & David are a real experience live, too. The Sächsische Zeitung (Saxonian Newspaper) wrote in a review: âWhen Davidâs fingers delicately sweep across the frettboard, and Maraâs warm, soulful voice resounds, the room begins to float. Just vocals and guitar, the Dresdener duo need nothing more to captivate their continually growing audience. What the studied guitarist elicits from his instrument borders on perfection -with David, intelligent harmonies interweave with grooving, driving rhythms to create a very special sound tapestry, a magic carpet on which Maraâs voice literally flies away on.
