101 started in the San Francisco Bay in 1996 and has since played all over California. According to fans, the band sounds similar to 'Billy Idol, Placebo, Our Lady Peace, The Cult, U2, Oasis, Bowie, Joy Division, and Bauhaus and a bunch of other bands, all mixed together.' 101 are mostly noted for breathing life into the New Wave genre (by adding their other influences to it) in the late 90s - a time when most labels, bands, and mainstream media were not interested in it. The band still refuses just to be labeled as a "New Wave," "Rock," or "Gothic" band because their music has an experimental aspect to it as well, especailly when done live. One thing is for sure though: 101 aren't about playing music for the any other reason than that they love music--something that has contributed to their uniquness, and set them apart from most of the bands in the area, and surely the bands just trying to make a buck. Maybe this is why continues to be one of the most influential (yet strangely maligned over the years by other bands) bands in the San Francisco bay area!?
