The Concept:
Fog laid low over the Upper Peninsula skewing the line between weather and the smoke from a Lucky Strike unfiltered. A kid with red hair both above and below the waistline rested his shoulders against a brickwall like Atlas could only dream about doing. "Well, goddamn." He said after a cliche wearin' a hoodie stepped from the curtain of mist.
"Well you didn't slip my bitch a shiny .44"
Two rounds popped and stapled Black Tommy to that wall.
The coward Tommy Couling ran like a British kid trying to finish a high school "kilometre" run.
written by: Elmo Gowen
âIt's real indie, Doing it with what you have available and making it full of heart and soul. Runs right through with the consistency of any deep expression.â
-Bernie Larsen, Spinout Records in regards to the album âThe Assassination of Black Tommy by the Coward Tommy Couling.â
The Assassination of Black Tommy By The Coward Tommy Couling
Where most modern rappers filling arenas, boomboxs, Sirus radio, and every conceivable hole in urban culture are stuck on sex, women, drugs, parties, and themselves. Blasting bass to fill clubs and sub woofers to absurdity and auto tune running like vocoders. This album is at the extreme opposite of this idea. It juts out an extreme lo-fi sound with performances that match the production. Everything is very raw, but not sloppy, giving an honest to goodness performance. These come out the best on âAces Highâ and âCripple.â
- Tony Dutcher of Clear Image
Good art is brutally honest in its intention. Tommy Couling's new album is raw and self-deprecating, smart and radically critical of both himself and the outside world. He's not afraid to point the shotgun of truth at himself and blow his own head off with it. It's a wicked ride, low-fi, white boy hip-hop, more akin to Beck and the Beastie Boys then to whatever that shit is they call hip-hop these days. No auto-tune, no songs about bling, just telling the truth about his own hood. This is by far the best thing Tommy Couling has put out yet.
-Little Mike of Direwood
Biography:
Tommy Couling has been a cook, a sailor, and, most recently an ice cream scooper at Mallardâs in downtown Bellingham. However, one thing that Tommy has never quite abandoned is his persona as a mixed-up kid from Michigan trying to make a name for himself. Tommyâs first effort, an independently produced album named âThe Assassination of Black Tommy by the Coward Tommy Coulingâ is an attempt to do away with the angsty persona Tommy has put out in the past, creating an original, honest, and raw feeling that appeals to anyone who is fed up with commercialized images of reality. Throughout the album, Tommy explores different outlooks on life and love. The song âCrippleâ likens him to Shakespeareâs Romeo, whereas âUnder theTable, Under the Groundâ Embraces Emiliano Zapataâs conclusion that it is better to die on your feet than live on your knees. By the end of the album, Tommy has broken out of his angry persona and let go of some of his fear of himself. Ladies and Gentlemen: welcome to raw.
